A WORLD, NOT A SOUND LIST

Free Ambient Sound Mixer for Reading and Writing

A page, one small goal, and a background you can shape. Eternal Nebula’s free 4-layer mixer lets you combine real recordings for reading or writing, then adjust each sound until it leaves room for the words.

Why a steady background can feel useful

For many people, a familiar wash of rain, water, or a fan makes a room feel less changeable. Small surrounding sounds may become less noticeable against that background, and choosing the same recording can be a simple cue to begin. Some people also enjoy the sense of company in café ambience. Those are reasons to experiment, not a promise of better concentration.

Reading and writing already ask you to follow language. Café voices or an interesting sound can pull you away from a sentence, so compare a short passage with the sound low and with it paused. Keep the option that feels easier to work with today. Silence is a complete setup, too. Our reading ambience guide offers a simpler one-sound starting point.

Build a quiet reading mix

On the homepage, choose Flowing Stream as your first sound. Use the + Mix buttons to add Midnight Rain and Fan Noise, then set their individual sliders to these starting levels:

These percentages are relative mixer settings, not a recommendation for loud listening. Begin with your device volume low and lower Mix volume as needed. Read a paragraph before changing anything. If the two water recordings feel too busy together, mute the rain and try just stream and fan.

Build a writing mix with a little company

For a first draft, try a rain-led café scene. Choose Midnight Rain, add Café Chatter and Fan Noise with + Mix, and use these starting levels:

If you start listening to the café voices, mute that layer while working on a difficult sentence or proofreading. You can leave the fourth slot empty. To try a little more water texture, add Flowing Stream at 15%, then decide whether it earns its place. Four layers is the limit, not a target.

Adjust one layer at a time

Keep one sound in the foreground and the others quieter. Each layer has its own volume, Mute, and Remove controls; Mix volume adjusts the whole blend. Change a supporting layer by about 5–10 percentage points, read or write a few lines, and listen again. The recordings have different textures and perceived loudness, so equal percentages will not necessarily sound equally loud. On some phones, use the device volume buttons for the overall listening level.

A sound card chooses that recording on its own; + Mix adds it to the blend. Adding or choosing a recording can begin playback, so set your device volume comfortably low first. The two recipe links above restore their layers paused and wait for you to press Play.

Give the session a clear beginning and ending

Use the focus timer for one concrete goal, such as “read ten pages” or “draft the opening paragraph.” Start with 15 or 25 minutes, choose 50 for a longer interval, or set a custom duration. Audio and the focus timer work independently: you can use the timer in silence or pause a recording without ending the session. See the focus timer guide for the controls.

For evening reading, the separate Sleep timer offers 15, 30, 60, or 90 minutes. Start your mix, choose a duration, and press Set sleep timer. The countdown continues while audio is paused; at the end it attempts a roughly 45-second fade before stopping. Cancel sleep timer clears that countdown without stopping playback. Browser suspension can delay the ending, and some devices restrict volume changes. It is not a precise alarm.

Keep or share a setup that fits

Use Copy link to this mix on the homepage once your layers are set. The link carries the track choices, individual levels, and mute settings, so you can bookmark it or send it to someone else. It does not include your task text, focus history, or timer settings. Opening a mix link restores the setup without autoplay. Create mix card makes a downloadable image with a link to the mix.

The homepage also has a browser-saved mix library. Optional free accounts can save and sync mixes and favorites across devices. You can use the mixer and both recipes without signing in. Audio streams from the site; cached pages do not mean the recordings have been downloaded for offline listening.
